Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system in which the body’s immune system attacks the protective sheath (myelin) that covers the nerves.

Multiple Sclerosis

Damage to the myelin disrupts the flow of information in the brain and between the brain and the body. In some patients, the nerves may deteriorate and the irreversible damage can affect sensory and motor skills such as eyesight and walking.

  • Multiple Sclerosis Types and Specialized Treatment

Multiple sclerosis affects an estimated 2.5 million people worldwide. A disorder of young adults, the disease predominantly targets women with varying levels of severity and symptoms that range from fatigue and mood disturbances to pain, cognitive loss, and motor or sensory impairment.

There are several multiple sclerosis subtypes. Up to 75% of cases begin with a relapsing-remitting (RRMS) course, which involves acute attacks that are separated in time, with full or partial recovery. The primary-progressive (PPMS) subtype involves a progression of disability with occasional plateaus and temporary minor improvements. Approximately 6-10% of people with multiple sclerosis appear to have PPMS at diagnosis. The secondary-progressive (SPMS) subtype is characterized by progression of the disease at a variable rate.
